Police Inspector gets life imprisonment for murder of girlfriend

A police Inspector with the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit (SWAT) has been convicted to life imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend at Adum in Kumasi.

A Kumasi High Court found Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, known as Tycoon, guilty by a 5-2 jury verdict on Friday, October 24, 2025.

He initially pleaded not guilty when he first appeared before the same court on July 26, 2023.

He has been accused of shooting 26-year-old Victoria Dapaah, also known as Maadwoa, a mother of one, multiple times in the abdomen and chest on April 20, 2023, at about 9:50 p.m. at Adum.

An uncle of the deceased later reported the incident to the police whilst the deceased was sent to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for treatment.

A medical officer on duty pronounced her dead on the same night.

A specialized police operation led to the arrest of the accused in his hideout at Sekyere near Effiduase in the Ashanti region.

Friday’s conviction brings to an end almost 36 months of waiting for the family of the late Maa Adwoa, who sought justice for their relative after her murder.

They have persevered and remained resolute in their pursuit for justice as they attended almost every court hearing.

The presiding judge, Her Ladyship Baah Tosu, offered the Attorney-General and defense counsel the opportunity to advance their arguments as the court closes the hearing.

Principal State Attorney, Ernest Aryeh, told the court evidence adduced before the court points to the fact that the accused was guilty and appealed to the jury to return with a guilty verdict.

He pleaded with the court to look at the plight of the deceased’s 3-year-old child for justice to prevail.

Defense Counsel, Eric Wanaa, who stood in for Yaya Seidu, insisted the jury should return a “not guilty” verdict.

The 7-member jury returned with a 5-2 decision that would change the fate of Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, a man who has pleaded not guilty to murder charges leveled against him.

This means 5 members of the jury found him guilty of murder. The court, based on Criminal Procedures Amendment Act 1092, slapped the convicted man with life imprisonment.

Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, who remained in a face mask, whispered some words into the ears of his legal counsel to tell the court that he was remorseful and pleaded for leniency.

But the A-G objected, insisting he was not and that the punishment for murder is fixed by law.

The sentence comes after 2-and-a-half years of proceedings of the court presided over by Her Lady Justice Rosemary Baah Tosu.

The relatives of Maa Adwoa turned into wild jubilation as they marked the court verdict with celebrations. They in turn poured a white powdered substance on the head of their family, Nana Addo, who has been ever-present in court throughout the trial.

An elated Nana Addo later told journalists the judgment signifies victory for the family.
